Faculty Positions

The Nutrition Research Institute is recruiting three research teams who will work together (as they would in a program-project) on Nutrition and Obesity/ Eating Disorders, Nutrition and Cancer, and Nutrition and Brain. Each team will consist of a lead scientist and four other principal scientists and their associated research groups. Additionally, three faculty members with methods expertise in metabolomics, nutrient genomics, and nutrient intake assessment are needed to serve as members of all three research teams. All faculty appointments will be tenured or tenure track in one of the departments at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

METABOLOMICS TENURED FACULTY POSITION
NUTRITION RESEARCH INSTITUTE AND DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY AND LABORATORY MEDICINE
UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL

POSITION: The Nutrition Research Institute and the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are jointly seeking applications for a faculty member with expertise in the area of metabolomics as it relates to nutrition and laboratory medicine. The position is located at a new UNC Chapel Hill research institute located on the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis, North Carolina. This is to be a tenured appointment at the full professor level.

OVERVIEW: The Nutrition Research Institute seeks to identify the mechanisms underlying metabolic/nutritional variability using nutrigenomic and metabolomic methods and to apply this understanding so as to explain individual responses to nutrients and diet. We seek a faculty member who specializes in metabolomics to study the effects of nutrients/diet on health and disease states linked to nutrients/diet such as, but not limited to, obesity, heart disease and cancer. The hope is that the applicant will be able to engage in translational research and collaborate with the current faculty working in the areas of laboratory medicine, cognition, obesity, metabolism and cancer. It is anticipated that the Nutrition Research Institute will be providing some ongoing “hard money” and laboratory space support for recruited faculty. In addition, the Institute will provide significant start-up funding. A cutting edge core animal facility as well as an instrumentation facility in microscopy, genomics and metabolomics, staffed by skilled scientists, will be available to all Institute investigators.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, in the School of Medicine, advances the practice of pathology and laboratory medicine, and the knowledge of diseases and disease mechanisms through innovative research spanning the spectrum from basic to translational to clinical.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Specific responsibilities will include developing a high quality research program relevant to nutrition with evidence of capacity to obtain external funding, some teaching responsibilities that will be negotiated with the Chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, advising graduate students and post-doctoral fellows and participating in the Institute’s and Department’s service programs.

QUALIFICATIONS: An earned doctorate in an appropriate discipline. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to establish and collaborate in multidisciplinary, funded research programs, ability to publish in quality journals, as well as a clear track record of scholarly accomplishment and teaching capacity. A minimum of 8 years of experience is required for the successful candidate.

DATES: Applications will be reviewed until the position is filled.

TO APPLY: Applicants must complete an online application by clicking on http://jobs.unc.edu/2502264 from any internet browser. Please attach curriculum vitae (including education, professional experience, grant support history, publication record, teaching and service) and cover letter summarizing qualifications. In your cover letter, specify that you are applying for a Metabolomics faculty position. Applicants should also submit 3 letters of recommendation (from referees of equal or higher academic rank than your current position) with the online application.
